Teeth Whitening Treatments for a Brighter Smile

Our dentist at  University Place Dental in Carbondale Illinois provides several different types of teeth whitening procedures.  Please review the teeth whitening procedures our office offers below:

Opalescence Boost

Opalescence Boost is a chemically activated power whitening gel that provides brighter, whiter teeth after just 40 minutes in the dental chair. The powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated, so it doesn’t require a hot, uncomfortable light to work.

Opalescence Boost consists of two syringes: The first contains 38 percent hydrogen peroxide, the active tooth whitening ingredient. The second syringe contains fluoride and potassium nitrate (PF), which helps strengthen tooth enamel, reduce sensitivity and protect against cavities. When mixed, the gel produces a distinct red color to help ensure correct placement and full removal of the product.

Safe and effective, Opalescence Boost usually takes only one dental visit to complete. While one visit is all you need to achieve a brighter smile, difficult stains or extreme discoloration may require additional treatments.

At University Place Dental, Opalescence Boost is just one of many teeth whitening options. Call us at 618-549-0208 to schedule a consultation.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

Take-home whitening trays are a type of teeth whitening procedure that you can perform at the comfort of your home. This is an easy and cost-effective teeth whitening treatment that can be easily obtained. You must follow the instructions given by our dentist to see the results at home. Although they can be a convenient option, obtaining great results can take longer than other treatments and they don’t always work well for deep stains. These trays are custom made to go over your teeth, and whiten your teeth through a special gel that is found on the inside of the trays.

These trays, once made for you, can then be taken home as a teeth whitening kit, along with the guidelines given by our dentist. The time period that they must remain on your teeth can vary according to your teeth whitening needs.

Zoom! In-Office Whitening

Over the years, we have seen more teeth whitening options come forward. Some have been more effective than others, yet one that has been a favorite for many due to its outstanding results is the zoom whitening teeth whitening treatment. Zoom whitening is safe and provides amazing results, providing you with teeth up to eight shades lighter in as little as one session.

How the Zoom! In-Office Whitening System Works

  • First, the dentist performs a comprehensive exam, which is meant to highlight any dental problems which need to be addressed before getting a whitening treatment done. This ensures that the Zoom whitening procedure works as effectively as possible and prevents any future damage to the teeth. If no such conditions are found, then our dentist performs a teeth cleaning procedure, which primes the teeth for the application of the whitening gel.

  • Our dentist then applies mouth spacers to prevent the cheeks or lips from coming into contact with the teeth. This is necessary to protect the softer tissue from the whitening agent in order to prevent any irritation.

  • Then, the teeth whitening gel is applied to the teeth. This gel consists of a hydrogen peroxide solution that serves as the active ingredient that whitens the teeth.

  • After the gel has been applied, our dentist focuses a bright ultraviolet light on the teeth. This light acts as a catalyst and causes oxygen to be produced through a chemical reaction within the gel. This oxygen permeates the upper layer of the teeth, and bleaches them from within. The upper layer of the teeth is also bleached in this way. The oxygen works to remove the stains both on top and within the enamel.

  • Afterwards, our dentist cleans away the zoom whitening gel and the procedure concludes.

Important: While the teeth whitening procedures mentioned in this article certainly work and have been proven to be effective, they are meant to accompany a good oral hygiene regime. It is very important to always maintain proper oral hygiene. This not only helps you get naturally whiter teeth over time, but it also maintains the results of your teeth whitening treatment and prevents stains from developing or darkening.

Always consult with our dentist before deciding on any of teeth whitening procedures mentioned above.
